Susan Harwood

Sue has significant expertise in negotiating financial settlements and is known for her proactive and client-focused approach. Many of her cases involve clients in the Armed Forces, particularly the Royal Navy, thanks to her personal connections and reputation in the military community.

Sue is one of only a few family lawyers in Cornwall ranked for family law in Chambers & Partners 2020, which notes that she is “not only a technically experienced practitioner, but also one who has the best interest of her client at heart at all times.” She is also listed as a Legal 500 Recommended Lawyer for Family Law in the Southwest.

A member of Resolution, Sue is committed to resolving matters constructively and without unnecessary conflict. She believes non-court dispute resolution is often the best route for families, as it puts the parties in control, reduces cost and uncertainty, and avoids the stress and delays often associated with court proceedings. Sue regularly uses methods such as negotiation, mediation and arbitration to help clients reach agreement. Formerly a collaborative lawyer, she continues to draw on those skills to achieve effective settlements, and the vast majority of her cases settle by consent rather than through contested hearings.

Sue believes that if parties can reach a fair and balanced agreement through meaningful discussions, the wider family relationships — especially where children are involved — can be preserved and strengthened despite the separation.

Clients regularly comment on Sue’s practical and empathetic approach, her responsiveness and her ability to simplify complex issues. She is known for prioritising her clients’ needs, offering flexible appointment times and ensuring matters are progressed efficiently and with minimal stress.

Sue qualified as a legal executive in 2004 and joined Woolley & Co in 2008 from a law firm in Truro.

Outside of work, Sue enjoys walking and cycling the coastline of Cornwall; regularly swims in the sea with her local community groups; is passionate about health and fitness generally and is part of a local wellness group focussing on health optimisation and longevity. Sue also loves riding her Harley Davidson motorcycle.
